How to Activate and Set Up the Interactive Notice Board

Turn your static displays into interactive self-service hubs. With one touch, employees can browse news, videos, documents, and live data at their own pace using a tabbed, interactive workspace.

Prerequisites:

  • User Role:
Valotalive Super Admin access to execute the overlay app assignment.

  • Subscription:

You need an active Interactive Notice Board (Overlay) subscription, which can be enabled via the Valotalive Shop under Subscriptions - Add on services.

💡 Interactive Notice Board is a paid add-on
Interactive Notice Board is available as a paid add-on with a monthly or yearly subscription fee. You can activate it from the Valotalive Shop.

Step 1: Activate your Interactive Sub Apps

You will need to create dedicated interactive apps for your SharePoint News Posts, PowerPoint or My Content Channel posts.

  1. Navigate to the Apps section in your Valotalive control panel

  2. Click New App and search for Interactive SharePoint, - PowerPoint, or - My Content Channel

Apps categories and using the filter "Interactive notice board"

  3. Choose your App and start to configure

    • Add content managers (in My Content)

    • Choose file (in SharePoint) or file (in PowerPoint)

    • Provide other settings

    • Save

  4. Repeat the steps for each interactive sub-app: Create a new sub-app for each content app that you’ll need. This can also be Power BI, or Web app, as an example.

💡 The size of the on-screen navigation control bar for the Interactive My Content Channel can be adjusted.

Step 2: Configure the Interactive Notice Board App

Now, you will set up the "Interactive Workspace" that will house these sub-apps.

  1. Navigate to Apps and search for the Interactive Notice Board app

Apps categories and using the filter "Interactive notice board"

  2. Click activate to open the app configuration.

  3. Apps to use: Under the app settings, you must select which internal applications this Workspace is allowed to "see"

  • Add all your newly created interactive sub-apps

  • Add your supporting data apps (e.g., your Power BI report apps or SAP Dashboards)

Step 3: Building your Interactive Tabs

This step defines the user interface that the teams will interact with on the shop floor.

  1. In the configuration, move to the View title and content section

Adding the Tabs to the Interactive app, and adding contents to the Tabs

  2. Create a Tab: Click "+."

  3. Map the Content:
Enter the tab name followed by a colon and the app reference numbers you want to display on that tab.

    Format: TabName:AppNumber,AppNumber
Example: People:1,2 — displays the Interactive My Content app and the Interactive SharePoint app side by side on the same tab.

⚠️ Do not add spaces between the tab name, colon, and app numbers.
    ✅ Correct: People:1,2
    ❌ Incorrect: People: 1, 2

Tab and app limits and layout options:

    • Up to 5 tabs can be added, with a maximum of 8 apps assigned across all tabs

    • Each tab displays content in either full screen (one app) or split view (two apps side by side)

    • Each tab can be individually named, subject to a maximum character limit

  4. Repeat for each tab until your full Interactive Notice Board layout is complete

Step 4: Additional settings

How to set the navigation tab position

The Tabs' location setting controls which edge of the screen holds the tab selector. You can position the tabs on any edge of the display, or leave it on Auto to let Valotalive choose based on the display orientation.

Tab location options

Option

Tab position

Best used when

Auto (default)

Left in landscape · Top in portrait

Display orientation changes or is unknown. Valotalive selects the best position automatically.

Left

Left edge

Landscape displays where vertical tab space is preferred.

Right

Right edge

Landscape displays where tabs should not obstruct left-side content.

Top

Top edge

Portrait displays or designs where a horizontal tab bar fits naturally.

Bottom

Bottom edge

Touch-first or floor-level displays where tabs are easier to reach from below.

How to change the tab position

  1. Open the Interactive Notice Board app in the Valotalive Dashboard.

  2. Go to the Configuration tab.

  3. Find the Tabs' location setting.

  4. Click the edit icon and select your preferred position: Auto, Left, Right, Top, or Bottom.

  5. Save the configuration. The tab bar moves to the selected position immediately on the display.

Auto behaviour: When set to Auto (by orientation), the tab bar appears on the left in landscape mode and at the top in portrait mode. This is the recommended setting if your displays can be rotated or if you are unsure of the final display orientation.

How to show or hide app titles on tabs

The Show app titles setting controls whether each tab displays the app name as a text bar above its content area. This is separate from the tab label itself.

  • Show app titles: Yes — a title bar appears at the top of each tab view showing the app name.

  • Show app titles: No (default) — no title bar is shown. The full tab content area is used for the app content.

How to change the setting

  1. Open the Interactive Notice Board app in the Valotalive Dashboard.

  2. Go to the Configuration tab.

  3. Find the Show app titles setting.

  4. Click the edit icon and select Yes or No.

  5. Save the configuration.

How to use icons as tab labels

Each tab in the Interactive Notice Board can display either a text label or a Google Material icon. Using icons keeps tabs compact and visually clear, especially when the tab bar is positioned on a narrow edge or when long text labels would not fit well.

Icon tab label syntax

To use an icon on a tab, enter the tab label using this format:

[Icon name]:app_number

Where:

  • [Icon name] — the name of the Google Material icon in square brackets. Use the exact name as shown on fonts.google.com/icons (spaces and capitalisation are accepted).

  • :app_number — the number of the app slot this tab should display (1, 2, 3, and so on).

Examples

Tab label syntax

Icon shown

App displayed on tab

[Home]:1

Home icon (house)

App slot 1

[Factory]:2

Factory icon

App slot 2

[Bar Chart]:3

App slot 3

[Safety Check]:4

Safety check icon

App slot 4

Safety:5

Text label: Safety

App slot 5

Finding icon names: Browse the full icon library at https://fonts.google.com/icons. Search for the concept you want (e.g. 'factory', 'safety', 'chart') and use the exact icon name shown below each icon. If the name has multiple words, include the spaces: [Bar Chart] not [barchart].

Mixing text and icon labels

You can mix text labels and icon labels across different tabs on the same board. Each tab's label is configured individually. For example, one tab could use [Home]:1 while another uses the text label Safety.

Tip: Short text labels (one word) and icons both work well. Longer text labels may be truncated or look crowded depending on the tab position and display resolution. Icons are recommended for boards with four or more tabs.

How to set a tab label

  1. Open the Interactive Notice Board app in the Valotalive Dashboard.

  2. Go to the Configuration tab.

  3. Find the tab you want to label.

  4. Enter the label in the tab name field using either plain text or the icon syntax: [Icon name]:app_number

  5. Repeat for each tab.

  6. Save the configuration. The tab labels update immediately on the display.

How to add a logo to the Interactive Notice Board

You can upload a company or site logo to the Interactive Notice Board. The logo appears in the top right corner of the board and is visible across all tabs.

How to upload the logo

  1. Open the Interactive Notice Board app in the Valotalive Dashboard.

  2. Go to the Configuration tab.

  3. Find the logo upload field. “Logo in title”

  4. Click to upload your logo file and select the image from your computer.

  5. Save the configuration. The logo appears in the top right corner of the board.

Logo tips: Use a rectangular PNG file with a transparent background for the cleanest result on different board themes. Keep the logo simple and high-contrast so it remains visible across different background colours.

The logo is optional. If no logo is uploaded, the top right corner of the board remains empty.

Step 5: Assign your Interactive Notice Board overlay to your screens
