Filter views on the Power BI App

Target the right data for the right audience. Valotalive supports Microsoft Power BI Basic and Advanced filtering, so you can display exactly the report view you need on your digital signage displays.

What are Power BI Filters?

Filters narrow your report to show only the data you want. You can apply page, visual, report, and drill-through filters from the filter pane in Power BI. Any filter applied carries directly into what your displays show.

How Filtering Works in Valotalive

Valotalive's Power BI app is fully compliant with Microsoft Power BI filters. The same filters you configure in Power BI Online or Desktop work identically in Valotalive — letting you target specific views for specific audiences across your displays.

Example use case: A company-wide sales report is shown across multiple sales offices. Using filters, each office sees only the data relevant to their region.

For a deeper look at this use case, see the Valotalive blog: How to Use Filters in Power BI on Digital Signage

Prerequisites

Before adding filters, make sure you have:

Step 1 – Find Your Table, Column, and Value in Power BI

You need three pieces of information from your Power BI report before configuring the filter in Valotalive.

  1. Open your report in Microsoft Power BI (cloud or desktop)

  2. Hover over a field name to reveal its Table and Column names

  3. Identify the Value you want to filter by

Example:

In this example, we want to show stores in North Carolina only. Hovering over the relevant field shows the Table is Store and the Column is Territory.

Example from the Power BI when "Table" value is "Store" and the "Column" value is "Territory".

In this report the value itself would be NC:

Example of Column "Territory" with value "NC" from a Power BI report

In this case the Table is Store and the Column is Territory.

Step 2 – Configure the Filter in Valotalive

  1. Go to Apps and open the correct Power BI app

  2. Select the Configuration tab and verify the correct report is selected. If needed, click the pen icon to open the drop-down menu and change the report.

At the Valotalive Power BI app's Configuration tab you choose the correct Power BI report

  3. Scroll down and click Show Advanced

    Show Advanced button

  4. Enter your filter values in the Filter to use field using the Table, Column, and Value identified above

  5. Click OK — the filter appears as a tag in the settings.

To create this specific filter in this case:

    • Table is Store

    • Column is Territory

    • The value is NC

Note that all text, filter values, are case sensitive

  6. Repeat for additional filters if needed (up to 6 filters maximum)

  7. To remove a filter, click the red minus (-) icon next to it

  8. Click Save in the top right corner
